T-20 Band Adjustment

There are two major versions of the T-20 Transmission:

Early: With steel bars connection the upper and lower plungers
Late: With U shapped channels connecting the upper and lower plugers.

This set of directions are for the late model units only, the ones with the U shapped channels

Tools required for this simple adjustment:
Screwdriver
Inch pound torque wrench ( Must be in inch pounds, not foot pounds)
T-20 distance tools
Super thin wall 9/16 socket on a ratchet.

Many machines came with these distance tools as part of the owners manual kit.
We do offer the distance tools HERE or they can be made with ease.

Plesae follow the procedure posted below:

These T-20's have been used in tens of thousands of Max, Hustler, Attex, Swamp Fox, Camel, Sears and many other Amphibious All Terrain Vehicles, as well as a few commerical vehicles.

T-20 Band adjustments: Late model T-20's only
These directions were outlined in the original Borg-Warner Service Manuals
   
Always disconnect negetive battey cable before servicing your machine.

T-20 Skid Steer shown removed for a clear view, but this job can be done with T-20 installed in machine

First remove hair pin clips from top and bottom plugers bolts on the right side first, do nothing at this time to the left side.

The hair pins will pop out with a screwdriver

Using a spare 9/16 thin wall socter, grind down outside of socket untill socket will fit inside the U shapped channel, without rubbing on the sides

 .Lossen upper and lower bolts about 4 or 5 turns

 

Note location shown by red pointer, tools used in next step go between underside of head of bolt and on top of small metal keeper.

Install distance tools between underside of head of bolt and on top of small metal keeper

 

Note: T-20 tools are painted yellow in this series so you can see the details of the installation.

Install both tools at same time, one on upper plunger and one on the lower plunger bolts, as shown in photos


NOTE: Tools install under head of bolt and on top of small metal keeper.

Using an inch pound torque wrinch attached to your thin wall 9/16" socket start tighting the upper and lower bolts first to:

5 inch pounds then to
10 inch pounds then to
15 inch pounds then finally to
20 inch pounds

Note: Tighten the top then the bottom then the top then bottom and so on untill you reach 20 inch pounds,( NOT FOOT POUNDS )

Using an inch pound torque wrinch attached to your thin wall 9/16" socket start tighting the upper and lower bolts first to:

5 inch pounds then to
10 inch pounds then to
15 inch pounds then finally to
20 inch pounds

Note: Tighten the top then the bottom then the top then bottom and so on untill you reach 20 inch pounds,( NOT FOOT POUNDS )

When bolts are tightened to 20 inch pounds, slide out the tools.

NOTE: You may need to tap them out with a small hammer

Reinstall hair pin clips:

Then: repeat process on the left side channels

Then you are done.........
